We could've had electric cars decades ago. We had the technology and could've built the infrastructure but oil is cheap and easy. But now is the time and it will accelerate in the next few years. We, as a people, on a grand scale can't tip these balances on an individual basis. That's why I've pretty much given up recycling plastic because the recyclers have no incentive to recycle it and it just ends up in a dump anyway. Same with electric cars (and solar panels on our houses). We need incentives to switch to a new technology and that only comes at a governmental level. Without that push, nobody will ever change their consumption habits until we run out of oil and gas...
