The Trump Numbers Don’t Add Up

There is some funky math going on in the latest NY Times polls

Something doesn’t add up

I have been trying to wrap my head around this for a few days now and things are not adding up then I read an article in Salon.com and it all came together and now it is starting to make more sense.

The issue that doesn’t add up is the polling about Trump and most specifically the New York Times poll that shows Trump is leading Biden by four percentage points in the latest poll they took. Normally, I just accept anything the New York Times says because they are the largest newspaper in the USA and supposedly fairly liberal or neutral. Why would they try to skew things?

In the Salon article, was thankfully thinking along the same lines as I was. Why are the numbers so good for Trump when the fundamentals look so bad for him?

First of all, Biden won by 70 electoral votes in 2020, which is a lot in a historical perspective. Clearly, people were upset with the way that Trump was handling things and voted him out. He lost by 7 million votes nationwide. That’s a huge number.

But let’s back up to the primaries. Haley has been losing most of them, but the gap isn’t all that big. Trump who is supposedly running as an “incumbent” with a weak opponent should get 80 or 90% of the votes but even in safe states, Haley is grabbing 20, 30 or…
