My personal feeling (I don't live in Arizona but frequently visit family there) is that it's combination of being a nutcase and being greedy. My gut feeling is that she really was in it for the attention and money. Being a former Senator can open a lot of lucrative positions for your making far more than being a senator. I wouldn't be surprised if she lost and just moved on to being a lobbyist or pundit.
