I've only been writing for a couple of months and have maybe a dozen articles under my belt. (BTW, I got the $100 bonus last month) I also write about a wide variety of topics, but what I find that sells the best is current interest stuff. Pandemic, Politics, Trump, Remote Work, Aliens, etc... Stuff people are passionate about. But even then, I will write a story on the same topic, one will thousands of views and one a handful. We are slave to the algorithm. Sometimes it's completely out of our control. If you get a lot of external views, obviously they are worthless. If you look at the top publications, they are centered around things like self help/health, politics, computer science, business, Writing fiction or poetry doesn't sell that well for most people. Self Help sells but it's a very crowded market. Politics sell but you really have to know what you are writing about. Same with computer science type stuff. Deeply technical articles. I am always on the edge whether to walk away because it seems like a waste of time and then I sit down and knock out 1500 words in an hour and publish it. Very few people make real money here...
As a side note, I have seen a lot of people were English is not their native language and it shows in their writing. I don't know who told them they could make a killing on Medium but it's a hard road even for us native English speakers that have a pretty good background in writing.
