I’m four years older than you. I’m a data engineer. I changed jobs two years ago because I couldn’t stand working the ultra large retailer I had been at for 7 years. I could still be there since they never layoff people. Moved to regional hospital chain but post Covid they had two rounds of layoffs and other budget slashing issues. They are threatening offshoring our jobs but nothing in writing. I’m trying to hang on two more years to get my last child through college. My wife was laid off 18 months ago after 15 years at a FAANG company. She’s 63. Was rehired six months later at same company in a different role but her network came through. I know if either of us got the axe there would be no way anyone would hire us. Thankfully I’m close enough to retirement to bridge the gap if I needed. All you have to do is get on Reddit and read r/recruitinghell to see how bad it is out there. Ageism is alive and well.
