I have worked for many companies over my years. Two recent ones let me work from home up to 4 days a week before the pandemic. They didn't care where you worked, as long as you got your shit done. My current company is a large multinational retail company and they do not trust their employees one bit (this is just for their corporate offices). They want us all back in the office 100% in August. They are exactly as you say "insecure and distrustful". I think this will be the divide between the haves and the have nots, unfortunately. Highly educated and talented (and wealthy) people will have the ability to work from anywhere, while the down trodden masses will be forced to sit in cubes.
