I equate the Remote work (Work From Home isn't an accurate description) to the Casual Friday revolution that started in the 1970s and slowly spread across corporate America in the subsequent decades to the point that most people don't wear suits and at many companies jeans and a clean tshirt is perfectaly acceptable office clothes now but for those of us that lived through this, it was a painful process to watch. First it meant that ties were optional. Then suit jackets got sacked. Then we didn't have to wear button down shirts and then finally jeans and tennis shoes. Now we are working from home in our sweat pants and not taking showers until noon. My point is that it was a long and slow process as acceptance finally creeped in.
Not everyone wants to work remotely and not all companies will every allow it. People will self select where they go and eventually companies that want to keep talent will give the option on where you want to work. I know for a fact that remote work has kept more women in the workplace through the pandemic than any other benefit.
But to your point about surveillance technology is something that isn't going to go away and has been offices for years already. All I can say is that people can choose with their feet and work somewhere else, especially if it's easier to find remote work somewhere else.
