Growing up in the 1950s through the 1980s so many Americans (and really everyone in the world) was terrified that we'd all be blown up from nuclear bomb dropping on our heads. The threat isn't gone, in fact it's probably worse than it's ever been with crazy countries like North Korea obtaining nuclear missiles. Now we have the global climate issue. I don't want to diminish climate change and it's impacts to life on earth, but the speed at which it is moving is much slower than nuclear proliferation. Nuclear bombs have the ability to kill far more people than climate change will ever. Sometimes we forget the bigger problems and focus on something we really can't do anything about.
