America has always been about greed and capitalism. Going all the way back to the puritans and southern slave owners. The individual is prized above the community or the country. Every individual's needs far outweigh the needs of the many. It would take an alien invasion at this point to turn people's minds around. The Hunger Games is the natural progression of this arc. It gets depressing if you dwell on it too long.
