1930s Germany was in a deep depression and also bascially a monolithic cultural society. Hitler also owned the military. While I agree that Trump could change the calculus to his favor, the lift to make everyone complacent and take over the military without a fight is really high. Too many people are doing well. We are not in a depression. If they try these draconian measures, they would crash the world's economy and send us back to the middle ages, but maybe that is what they want.
